In 1992 Ann Chapman, Chair of the Ōtaki Women’s Health Group and a coalition of women’s groups got together to discuss how they could celebrate the centennial of Women’s Suffrage.
The resulting exhibition, held at Raukawa Marae, depicted women from the Māori, Pākehā and Chinese communities in Ōtaki over the course of a hundred years. Our exhibition Women of Ōtaki: photographs 1860s–1970s is a selection from that show.
In this talk Ann will discuss the photographs, the origins of the original exhibition, and the lives of some of the women featured.
