This painting belonged to Rachel Hodgkins, Frances Hodgkins’ mother, and while we cannot be sure of the exact relationship between Constantia Lifford and Rachel Hodgkins, she is part of a romantic ancestral mythology which both Frances and Isabel Hodgkins enjoyed.
