Seagrass Gallery, new to Ōtaki Beach, will open on every Saturday in October from 10am to 5pm with an exhibition to raise funds for the re-development of MAHARA, the District Art Gallery for Kāpiti.
MAHARA, currently under construction in the Waikanae town centre, has an estimated opening date of towards the middle of 2023.
‘Seagrass Gallery is new to Ōtaki Beach,’ says MAHARA Director Janet Bayly, ‘and we are delighted that its first exhibition will be helping us as we continue our fundraising campaign.’
Mahara Pops up at Seagrass will feature 17 Kāpiti artists using a range of media. Many are established practitioners, working on the coast for years. All works will be for sale with a third of the purchase price going to the Mahara Gallery redevelopment.
‘The generosity of local artists and the involvement of Seagrass Gallery free of charge are making this exhibition possible,’ Janet says. ‘We are looking forward to presenting the work of these talented individuals to the visiting, and hopefully buying, public.’
Ōtaki Beach resident Grant Stevenson, who has established Seagrass Gallery in his studio at 38 Moana Street, is also learning to be a painter. Seagrass will feature his work in November in this year’s Kāpiti Coast Art Trail.
