Graham Percy (1938–2008) was a highly respected New Zealand artist, illustrator and typographer. Though based in London for much of his adult life Graham Percy was born in Stratford, Taranaki and studied at Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland. While his works are held in the National Galleries in Scotland, they have never been publicly exhibited before in New Zealand.
The exhibition features 62 large and medium scale drawings including a suite of anthropomorphic kiwis who travel around the world and through time. There is also original artwork from some of his best-known children’s books: The Fantastic Flying Adventure by Gerald Durrell, Aesop’s Fables, the Sam the Pig series by Alison Uttley and Jeremy Lloyd’s The Woodland Gospels.
A Micronaut in the Wide World, The Imaginative Life and Times of Graham Percy was curated and developed by Gregory O’Brien. Mahara hosts the exhibition at the conclusion of its hugely popular national tour of 21 venues. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication of the same title, also by O’Brien.
