Isabel was the subject of many of Frances Hodgkins’ early works, including a profile portrait which had been presented to Will Field shortly after their engagement in 1892, but this is the last known image of Isabel that she painted.
The portrait is dated 1895, two years after Isabel’s marriage to Will Field and her shift to Wellington. It was probably begun when Isabel paid a visit to Dunedin towards the end of 1894 while Will Field was in Australia.
