Although she is regarded primarily as a landscape artist, Isabel Hodgkins’ sketch books of the late 1880s are filled with detailed studies of plants and show an early preference for leaves and flowers. Irises is a skilled rendering of a closely observed natural subject. It shows the vivid colour—especially blue—that was a feature of Isabel Hodgkin’s work.
