The painting is undated. E H McCormick dates it to 1902, just prior to Frances Hodgkins’ return to New Zealand. But Frances Hodgkins was also painting in the Netherlands from the latter part of 1907 until mid 1908. The painting style with its rhythm of broad slashing brushstrokes suggests this later period.
