Most of Petrus van der Velden’s early paintings were marine subjects—ships and fishing boats painted in the canals, harbours and docks of Amsterdam and Rotterdam between 1867 and 1871. Six of the seven paintings in the Field Collection are from this period. There is no record of provenance of the pictures but they may have been given to Will Field by van der Velden, in lieu of repayment of a money loan.
